The Bowl of Saki Commentary

Commentary for:

Think, before envying the position of others, with what difficulty they have arrived at it.

— Hazrat Pir-o-Murshid Inayat Khan

Commentary from Hazrat Murshid SAM (Sufi Ahmed Murad Chisti, Samuel L. Lewis):

What are those with the worldly position? If they have not the supreme knowledge, they must look carefully, lest in an unexpected hour, they are blown like the chaff in the wind. What are those with intellectual honor? If behind intellectual honor there is not sincerity and humility, a person will be thrown to earth with violence at some unexpected time.

Those who have climbed and climbed successfully have done so through the pains which the heart has received, opening it so it pours its life-blood onto the very ground. In the sight of God human honors are as nothing, and the love of a parent or friend or devotee, given unselfishly, supplies all the merit that is.
